And back to Italy again. This time Murano- the island famous for glassblowing. Much like Edinburgh banishing the manufacture of candles to the very edge of the town ( at that time) in Venice glass blowing all took place on this island for reasons of safety. The secrets of the glass were very jealously guarded and so there is a rather blood curdling history which is surprisingly at odds with the tranquility of the location. Marina Fiorato captures some of the story in her book ” The Glassblower of Murano”.
